Wallpaper is a thing of the past, and many new home buyers dont care for someone elses taste in wallpaper, and would rather have it removed and painted to the color of there choice.
A lot of old homes have multiple layers of wallpaper in the rooms making it hard to remove, also most plaster walls were not primered which can make the removal process very tedious and timely.
Many companys will use steamers to remove the wallpaper, or constant spraying of warm water on the walls allowing time to sit and then scraping the paper off with a 3 inch putty knife being extra careful not to gauge the plaster or drywall.
After the wallpaper is removed, there is still a residue from the glue that held the paper on. A glue removing chemical is needed spraying it on the walls letting it sit for a moment, then additional scraping maybe needed, after that a bucket of clean water and a sponge are needed to thoroughly wipe the walls clean. Most walls after the paper is removed need patching and minor repairs.
